Sustainability Challenges for Beginners: Baby Steps You Can Take to Save the World

In today’s day and age, most of us want to be eco warriors, and we’re all for it! Whether you want to or not, the thoughts of using a plastic bag, shopping in a mall or driving over a walkable distance are bound to make you feel a little guilty. In comes sustainability - a lifestyle that is no longer a choice, but almost an obligation. Here recycling is a superpower, reusable water bottles are your trusty sidekicks and swapping clothes is your new hobby.

Now, before you start picturing yourself as the next environmentalist, let's acknowledge the truth: sustainability can be as intimidating as trying to assemble IKEA furniture without instructions. But fear not! The key to incorporating sustainability in your routine is to start slow through beginner-friendly challenges that won't leave you feeling like a fish out of water (pun intended).

Before we begin-

Remember that habits are built over time and the slower you do it, the longer they’ll stick around. Make a list of things that seem easy for you to do. Aim for changing one thing every month or two, then move on to the next.

1. The Great Reusable Revolution

Let's begin with an easy one, shall we? Replace single-use plastic water bottles with reusable ones. It's like buying a new best friend that won't let you down or clog up landfills. They’re pretty, reflect your quirky personality and are not toxic. Plus, you'll save money in the long run, and who doesn't love that?

2. Conquer the Grocery Store

Get yourself some snazzy, eco-friendly bags and proudly strut through the store like the sustainability superstar you are. Bonus points for remembering to use them every time and remembering to carry your water bottle along too!

3. Lights Out, Guilt Off

If your home is brighter than a supernova, it might be time to consider energy-efficient lighting. Swap out those old incandescent bulbs for LED or CFL bulbs. They use less energy and last longer, so you can save the planet while dimming the mood (in a good way.)

4. The Phantom Menace

No, it's not a Star Wars reference. "Phantom energy" is the electricity consumed by appliances and chargers when they're not in use but still plugged in. Unplug them to save both energy and money and your electric bill will thank you!

5. Clothes Make the (Sustainable) Person

Fast fashion might be tempting, but it's also a villain in the sustainability story. Instead, consider thrift stores or eco-conscious clothing brands. Start a club with your friends where you swap outfits, or go fabric-shopping and your neighbourhood tailor will create, one-of-a-kind outfits for you. Your wardrobe can be trendy without leaving a trail of environmental destruction in its wake.

6. Food for Thought

Eating sustainably doesn't mean becoming a kale-eating, tree-hugging hippie (unless that's your thing). Start small by reducing meat consumption and opting for locally sourced, seasonal produce. It's not only better for the planet but also for your gut and your taste buds.

Remember: if it’s not easy for you to cut down on meat, don’t beat yourself up. Every step counts and you can put this last on your list (or not at all) and focus on doing something else instead.

7. Spread the Word

Lastly, share your sustainability journey with friends and family. The more, the merrier! You might even inspire someone to join you on your quest to save the world, one reusable shopping bag at a time.

Want to save the planet? Take these challenges one at a time to become an eco-warrior. Who knows, maybe one day you'll be the one giving IKEA furniture assembly instructions a run for their money – but for now, start with those reusable water bottles!
